Because “The Heirs of the Dragon” has such a slow pulse, this whole moment registers mostly as a box-checking exercise. “Make sure we include classic GOT gore that will make some people look away from their TV screens.” Check! The fact that prior to her terrible, lethal C-section, Aemma tells Rhaenyra that “the child bed is our battlefield” only makes the whole sequence and its metaphorical message about the plight of women seem more facile. Again, it’s the series telling us what to think and feel rather than organically eliciting thoughts and feelings.
HBO released images of all the key characters in House of the Dragon.
Without revealing too much about the events of season 2, know that Rhaenyra will be looking to exact revenge for her son’s death at the hands of Prince Aemond’s dragon, Vhagar. This will eventually unfold into a much larger battle, culminating in The Dance of the Dragons. The war will consume all of the Seven Kingdoms — major Westerosi houses will forge alliances with either Targaryen faction. Expect the return of houses like the Starks and Lannisters from Game of Thrones. While the first season of House of the Dragon put family drama and politics center stage, we will see a lot more action going into season 2.

Even as a supporter of Team Black who has known about Blood and Cheese since Fire & Blood was released in 2018, I know this is going to be difficult to watch. House of the Dragon season 2 was filmed at Leavesden Studios in the United Kingdom, per an official HBO announcement. This “brown and plain” wild dragon is tamed by, as The World of Ice & Fire describes her, a “plain, baseborn and disreputable girl” named Nettles, who feeds the dragon mutton to win it over. This she-dragon is bound to Aegon II”s son Prince Jaehaerys Targaryen. The steed of dragonrider Prince Joffrey Velaryon, Tyraxes was not as big as Vermax and Arrax.
Millie Alcock and the rest of the first-generation Targaryens and Hightowers will, as far as HBO has indicated, not be returning this season in flashbacks. That doesn’t mean that we won’t see them again someday, but at least Paddy Considine does not have to jeopardize his own health for another stunning performance that the awards circuit decides to ignore. In the meantime, be sure to read our House of the Dragon, Season 1 review, our ending explained for it, and learn why Season 2 will feel like the "middle run" of Game of Thrones. Another beast yet to be introduced in House of the Dragon, this wild dragon is known in Fire & Blood for never having been tamed let alone ridden – and for eating other dragons, hence his name. Legend has it that it’s lurked on Dragonstone since before the arrival of the Targaryens. The she-dragon Morning, the offspring of Syrax, is hatched during the Dance of the Dragons.

So, we’ll see the “Dance of the Dragons,” so nicknamed by the civilians of Westeros, take place with mass casualties as a result. Said to be five times smaller than Vhagar, this young male dragon is the steed of Prince Lucerys Velaryon (Elliot Grihault). Arrax and Lucerys play a pivotal role in the Season 1 finale of House of the Dragon. This young male dragon won’t factor into House of the Dragon until later in the series, during which time it will be the steed of Aegon the Younger. The ten-episode Game of Thrones spin-off will "depict how the House of Targaryen fell into a bitter and brutal civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons — presaging the beginning of the end of the ruling family of Westeros." The much-anticipated Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, which is based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood book about House Targaryen, is set to premiere this week.

Aegon decides that he wants to unite the warring groups of Westeros and rule it all because he can. He builds the big table with a map of Westeros that we see Daenerys use at Dragonstone in Game of Thrones. But Aenar heeds his daughter’s vision, gathers up the family and their dragons, and departs Valyria. They sail across the sea to an island where they construct the castle that comes to be known as Dragonstone. In Game of Thrones, Dragonstone guards the entrance to Blackwater Bay. Stannis Baratheon takes refuge there after the Battle of Blackwater until he heads to the Wall to help with the Battle of Castle Black.
On May 5, the network shared the first stills from the upcoming series. The network first made the announcement in 2019, around the time when news broke that another potential prequel show, which focused on the Age of Heroes and starred Naomi Watts, would no longer be produced. The Hightowers are a wealthy house whose seat of power is in Old Town, and at the beginning of the series Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) is the Hand of the King. (This is the same position that Ned Stark had for King Robert Baratheon at the beginning of Game of Thrones).
The opening episode of House of the Dragon (Sky Atlantic) is simply spectacular. For an hour, it rattles through everything that made its predecessor, Game of Thrones, such a titan of the small screen, especially when it was in its prime. Family members make promises they cannot keep as they connive and betray each other, in secret and in plain sight. There is a drunken orgy, an axe to the face, a caesarean without anaesthetic, seeping wounds, severed limbs and severed organs, too. George RR Martin’s world struts its way back on to our screens with utter confidence and brio. Paddy Considine is King Viserys Targaryen, the heir to the Iron Throne and successor to Jaehaerys I Targaryen.
Amid much grumbling about Rhaenyra, Viserys’s brother steps forward. Daemon is a hotheaded peacock who refuses to play by any rules he considers beneath him. The political wheel turns on a rumour, and as Viserys begins to appear frail, there is a growing sense of urgency about where the wheel will stop.
Game of Thrones is based on Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, but House of the Dragon is based on his “history” book, Fire & Blood. The book is credited as written by an Archmaester of Westeros, with various accounts on what happened during the Targaryen reign. Catch exclusive behind-the-scenes interviews with the cast and crew breaking down the series' biggest moments and the process behind creating its memorable sets. The player will meet these and other characters during the game, but as far as we know, the original cast isn’t returning to voice their characters. Instead, the game will have a new voice cast who will try to sound similar to the HBO actors. “We specifically set out to start the show as Game of Thrones and not to try and deviate,” Sapochnik recently told the New York Times.

If you watched Game of Thrones you of course remember the Mother of Dragons herself, Daenerys Targaryen, and her quest to take back the Iron Throne. From that period, House of the Dragon brings us back nearly 200 years to the time in Westerosi history when House Targaryen was at the height of its power. The series begins with the reign of King Viserys I, the fifth Targaryen ruler, the question of his succession, and the events that unfold after he names his daughter, Rhaenyra, heir — a title a woman had never assumed. Like the show--which is a Game of Thrones spin-off set nearly 200 years in the past--House of the Dragon will see you battle your friends for control of the Iron Throne. It combines art, storylines, and characters from the series into a good-looking board game, and perhaps the nicest touch are the game tokens each player will use. Instead of a top hat or a race car, these are golden zinc pieces that represent one of the six major houses of the show; House Targaryen, House Hightower, House Velaryon, House Lannister, House Strong, and House Royce.
With such detail, if it had darted between Houses and their various seats of power, then I am not sure I would have been able to keep up. Even so, I did miss the breadth of Game of Thrones, and its ability to move between locations, each so vivid in their own different ways. House of the Dragon, the prequel series to HBO’s epic Game of Thrones, premieres Aug. 21.
Specifically, you can read George R. R. Martin’s novel Fire & Blood to know what will happen in House of the Dragon season 2 in gruesome detail. Meanwhile, the Hand of the King, Otto Hightower, subtly encouraged Viserys to remarry after the death of his first wife. He positioned his own daughter, Alicent, to fill the role and succeeded. This wouldn’t matter on its own, but the new Queen would eventually mother a son named Aegon. This muddied the Targaryen’s line of succession — the Iron Throne was still technically promised to Rhaenyra, but the King’s son would be a clear and potential rival.
