Like the show--which is a Game of Thrones spin-off set nearly 200 years in the past--House of the Dragon will see you battle your friends for control of the Iron Throne. It combines art, storylines, and characters from the series into a good-looking board game, and perhaps the nicest touch are the game tokens each player will use. Instead of a top hat or a race car, these are golden zinc pieces that represent one of the six major houses of the show; House Targaryen, House Hightower, House Velaryon, House Lannister, House Strong, and House Royce.
With such detail, if it had darted between Houses and their various seats of power, then I am not sure I would have been able to keep up. Even so, I did miss the breadth of Game of Thrones, and its ability to move between locations, each so vivid in their own different ways. House of the Dragon, the prequel series to HBO’s epic Game of Thrones, premieres Aug. 21.

Meanwhile, the Hand of the King, Otto Hightower, subtly encouraged Viserys to remarry after the death of his first wife. He positioned his own daughter, Alicent, to fill the role and succeeded. This wouldn’t matter on its own, but the new Queen would eventually mother a son named Aegon. This muddied the Targaryen’s line of succession — the Iron Throne was still technically promised to Rhaenyra, but the King’s son would be a clear and potential rival.
